Respect
Respect: The Foundation of Strong Character
At Mastery Martial Arts – Troy, we believe that respect isn’t just taught — it’s lived. In our martial arts program, respect is more than saying “yes sir” or “yes ma’am.” It’s about learning to value yourself, others, and the world around you.
Why Is Respect So Important for Children?
In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, many children struggle with impulse control, listening skills, and authority. That’s where we come in. Our Core Life Skill of Respect helps children develop:
Better listening skills at home and in school
Improved self-control in emotionally charged situations
Healthier relationships with parents, teachers, and peers
The confidence to speak and act with integrity

How We Teach Respect in Every Class
Every martial arts class at our Troy, MI location includes exercises and conversations designed to help students:
Respect themselves by taking pride in their appearance, effort, and behavior.
Respect others by listening without interrupting, following directions, and using kind words.
Respect property by taking care of their uniform, equipment, and belongings.
Respect time by showing up on time and staying focused during class.
Our instructors model respectful behavior every step of the way — and students quickly learn that respect earns trust, builds leadership, and opens doors.
Real Results That Make a Difference

Communication
At Mastery Martial Arts, we teach Communication as a lifelong skill that shapes not only how children speak, but how they think, connect, and lead. We break it down into four powerful levels — each one designed to support a child’s growth into a confident, compassionate, and successful leader.
We begin with “How I Communicate with Myself,” which is the foundation of self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Children learn to harness the power of positive thinking, replace negative self-talk with empowering messages, and develop an inner voice that encourages effort, persistence, and pride. When a child believes in themselves and speaks kindly to themselves, it changes how they show up in every part of life.

The second level, “My Family,” teaches children how to communicate respectfully and effectively with parents and siblings. This includes using eye contact, tone, and clear words to express thoughts and feelings. When kids can talk to their family — and be heard — it builds trust, reduces conflict, and strengthens bonds at home. These skills often lead to a more peaceful household and a stronger parent-child relationship.
At the third level, “My Community,” students learn how to present themselves at school, in class, on teams, and in extracurricular activities. Whether answering a teacher’s question, introducing themselves to a new friend, or working on a group project, our students are taught to speak with clarity, confidence, and courtesy. This helps them stand out in a positive way and builds leadership among their peers.
Finally, “My World” expands a child’s perspective beyond their immediate circle. Here, we explore how they think and speak about others — people from different backgrounds, beliefs, and cultures. We encourage students to use words that show empathy, understanding, and appreciation for all people. This not only helps them become thoughtful citizens but also prepares them for a world where connection and compassion are the keys to success.
When a child learns to communicate at all four levels, they gain the tools to build stronger relationships, stand tall under pressure, and influence others in positive ways — all essential traits of a happy, successful leader.
