27 years ago, I was the chief instructor at a leading children’s martial arts organization in Michigan. While the children were receiving great coaching on their technical abilities to spar, I was troubled by the singular focus on their physical training. As much as I voiced my opinion that there was so much more to martial arts than just the physical aspect, it began to feel like the only thing that the other instructors cared about was how well a child could fight.
I knew that there was so more to martial arts than just fighting. After all, the word ‘arts’ means that there is skill, nuance, and finesse involved in molding an improved person through the practice. I consistently attempted to implement changes to the instructors’ mindsets without any success. I believed that we could offer so much more as mentors who were working with children at impressionable ages, and that the opportunity to make meaningful and lasting changes for those children with whom we worked was being lost.
I began enjoying the influences of great thought-leaders and motivational speakers such as Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, and Jim Rohn. Their teachings helped shape my life for the better, but I wasn’t able to implement any of their wisdom in my classes until, finally, in 1997, I opened my very own martial arts school, where I was able to infuse vital personal development and life skills into my curriculum.
